Starting in Bogotá, this journey takes you deep into the heart of Colombia's emerald country along winding Andean backroads. From the underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá to the colonial streets of Villa de Leyva, every stop tells a story.

The highlight is a private visit to an artisan emerald mine: ride on horseback deep into the mountains to a working mine, where you'll chisel and keep the emeralds you uncover.

495 miles | 80% paved, 20% unpaved

DAY 1: BOGOTÁ TO VILLA DE LEYVA (5 hrs, 135 mi)
Andean twisties out of Bogotá through La Calera, the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral carved inside a working salt mine, and Villa de Leyva's giant colonial plaza.

DAY 2: VILLA DE LEYVA TO MACHETÁ (3.5 hrs, 85 mi)
Pick your morning: blue lagoons, dinosaur fossils or a curious clay house. Then up into the páramo with clouds at eye level to a boutique homestay high in the mountains. The side of Colombia almost no tourist sees.

DAY 3: MACHETÁ TO CHIVOR (5.5 hrs, 70 mi)
Secret ferries, tunnels and roadside waterfalls. Cross an Andean reservoir by ferry, ride 12 natural tunnels, stop at a 70m waterfall and the turquoise pools of Pozo La Calavera. Overnight at El Recuerdo, a rustic emerald-country lodge.

DAY 4: EMERALD HIGHLANDS (2 hrs, 35 mi, all off-road)
Most souvenirs are made in a factory. Ours is buried in a mountain. Horseback to a working emerald mine, explore a 400m shaft with real miners and keep whatever you chisel out. Then an emerald workshop with a local gem expert.

DAY 5: CHIVOR TO CHOACHÍ (5.5 hrs, 110 mi)
The hardest day of the tour ends in a hot spring. We planned it that way. Remote backroads with river crossings and forest canyons, then an off-road descent to Termales de Santa Mónica.

DAY 6: CHOACHÍ TO BOGOTÁ (1.5 hrs, 60 mi)
Coffee farm tour with a full tasting, La Chorrera waterfall, and winding páramo roads back to Bogotá.

Best for: All levels. Mostly paved, but we adapt the route to the group: keep it on the tarmac or add more off-road.
